3pointD.com reports Second Life will receive a visual upgrade soon: nicer lighting and skies. Sounds promising! Check the site of software creator Windward Mark (just bought by Linden Labs). It has tons of screenshots and a movie of Nimble.

It all looks good to me, though I’m wondering how well it scales on the average Second-Life-user-computer. On a related note, Paladin Studios developed a real-time atmospherics module for Quest3D: Qumulus weather system.
